Measure Curtains

Getting Started

Measuring is slightly different depending on whether you have a rail/track or a decorative pole and on the type of curtains you want.  Scroll down the page to find the measuring instructions to suit your particular window.

1.  Measuring for Curtains on a Rail or Track

Suitable for curtain heading types:
French/Pinch Pleat and Pencil Pleat:

To be sure of the best possible fit, take time to measure your window carefully. Ideally, the curtain rail/track should be positioned 15cm above the window and extend 15cm - 20cm either side.

A. Measuring the width: Measure the total width of the metal pulley rail or plastic track.
Note:  We'll add 2.5cm to allow the hanging curtains to overlap in the middle when they are closed.

B. Measuring the drop: Before measuring the drop, decide whether you want your curtains to fit below the sill or to the floor. We suggest that:

  • Curtains that fall below the sill finish 15cm below.

  • Floor length curtains finish 1.5cm from the floor (See fig. 1).

Measure the drop from the top of the rail (See fig. 2).

To be sure of the best possible fit, take time to measure your window carefully. The curtain pole should be positioned 15cm above the window and extend 15cm - 20cm either side.

A. Measuring the width: Measure the total width of the pole (excluding decorative ends 'finials').

For pencil pleat or french/pinch pleat curtains measure the drop from the eye - the small metal ring at the bottom of each curtain ring. This will prevent the pole or rings from being obscured by the curtain (See fig. 4).

For eyelet or tab top curtains measure the drop from the top of the pole (See fig. 5).

For all floor length curtains, make sure to check the drop at both sides and in the middle and record the longest drop in your measurements (as some floors can be uneven).

Note:  We will make up a pair of curtains for you unless you specifically ask for one larger panel instead (just include in your 'other comments' to us if this is what you want).

IMPORTANT

It's important that you carefully measure your windows to ensure your curtains fit correctly. If you are in any doubt, please be sure to check again. By supplying these measurements you take full responsibility for the finished size of your curtains.
